Learn how to properly hunt fish underwater! More than just a day trip, there will be two spearfishing guides who will provide you with decades worth of knowledge as well as 1 on 1 coaching in the water. This feedback and guidance will help set a foundation for your spearfishing career that often takes years of lessons learned the hard way to develop. And even better, you'll most likely come home with dinner!
Our captain and our very own spearfishing guide will escort you to the Coronado Islands where you can come face to face with everything from Sheephead and Calico Bass up to White Sea Bass and Yellowtail (and almost always in much clearer water). This will be a day you won't forget, and you will get tools that you can use and develop for the rest of your life.
Safety is paramount with diving, so we do require that you have a certification from a freediving training agency. The depths we will be diving are largely between 10 and 40 feet so we won't be pushing any depth boundaries, but we want to make sure everyone is familiar with safety procedures and the basics of freediving.
Included: 3/4 day trip to the Coronado Islands, the Visa, spearfishing guides, and light snacks
Not Included: 1) Documentation...biosphere permit, Mexican fishing license, and a passport. 2) Lunch 3) Equipment/gear (see below)
Equipment requirements
Almost everything can be rented from J&J Spearfishing Supplies except for a mask and snorkel! Total cost of freediving and spearfishing gear is $65 per day.
Mask – A low volume spearfishing/freediving mask. A standard snorkel/scuba mask is OK for the Level 1 Freediver course.
Snorkel – A simple J. style snorkel
Wetsuit – This is your most important piece of equipment. For San Diego, it’s highly recommended to have a 5mm proper spearfishing or freediving two piece, open cell inner/nylon outer suit. If you don’t have access to this suit, then a very well fitting 5mm full neoprene suit, preferably with a hood is OK. A proper freediving suit will positively influence your course experience. James & Joseph offers freediving wetsuit rentals
Fins – Longblade freediving fins. Standard snorkel/scuba fins are acceptable for the Level 1 Freediver course. We do not accept “split fins” or the full open heel and bootie style. J&J has fins available for rent if needed.
Weight belt – A rubber weight belt is preferred. J&J has weight belts available for rent if needed
Weights – You will want more weight than you use for line diving...closer to 16-18lbs. J&J has weights available for rent if needed
Spearfishing gear - speargun, stringer, and a dive knife
Optional Items – If you are sensitive to the cold water, you may want to consider purchasing some VENTED Docs Pro Plugs.
